Why take Omega-3 supplements?

The consumption of omega-3 is essential to help you maintain good health. However, as ANSES specifies, they must be included in a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

What are Omega-3 fatty acids used for and what are their health benefits?

Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, which plays an important role in ensuring the body's optimal performance. Alpha linolenic acid (ALA) is the main precursor of Omega-3 and should not be confused with alpha linoleic acid, which is the precursor of Omega-6. Sometimes regarded as negative, Omega-6 is nevertheless essential to the body, just like Omega-3. They play a number of roles, for example as catalysts for certain regulatory or structural molecules.

Once ingested and assimilated by the body, Alpha-linolenic acid is used to make two other Omega-3 fatty acids: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are often insufficiently synthesised by the body and therefore should also be included in the diet to cover daily requirements.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been the subject of much scientific research in recent years and continue to be studied today. According to the AFSSA (the French Agency for Food Safety), Omega-3 fatty acids have many benefits. Most notably they help:

  • To contribute to maintaining a healthy heart;
  • To promote normal brain and eye development in the foetus and in children when given in breast milk, with a minimum daily intake of 200 mg;
  • To help maintain normal brain function and vision;
  • To help maintain normal blood pressure and triglyceride levels in the blood.

Where is Omega-3 found?

Omega-3 intake is essential for your health. However, as stated by the ANSES (the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety), they should be included as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Their positive effects on the body, particularly on the cardiovascular system, should also be combined with regular physical activity.

A variety of foods are known to contain Omega-3: fish and fish oils, cod liver, egg yolk and seafood will provide a good supply of these fatty acids.

Omega-3: the correct daily allowance

As with any nutrient, there are suggested dietary guidelines for Omega-3 EPA and DHA. ANSES recommends taking 250 mg of EPA and DHA per day.

The daily allowance of Omega-3 should be in line with current guidelines but also with your own dietary requirements. Indeed, particular groups of people such as pregnant women may need a higher intake of Omega-3, as it is especially important for the normal development of the foetus during pregnancy.

When should I take Omega-3 capsules: morning or evening?

Omega-3 should ideally be taken with meals for better absorption by the body and to limit acid reflux. You can take your capsules once or twice a day, during breakfast and/or dinner.

How long should I take an Omega-3 supplement?

The Omega-3 supplements are usually taken for several weeks and up to 3 months. This may be repeated several times during the year.
